Fence Staining & Painting in Chicago Suburbs
A fence finish should be chosen for the wood and the coating already on it. We handle fence staining and painting requests in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs and North Shore, with preparation and application based on the selected product and surface condition.
Stain or paint: start with the existing surface
Bare wood, weathered stain and peeling paint require different preparation. A transparent stain cannot simply cover an opaque coating and reveal the grain beneath it. Send close-ups of the current finish so the appropriate options can be discussed.
Preparation and drying
Cleaning, removing loose coating and allowing the wood to dry may be necessary before application. Nearby plants, paving and hardware need protection. The number of coats and application method follow the product instructions rather than a universal one-coat or two-coat rule.
Price depends on more than fence length
Height, picket spacing, lattice, gates and the number of sides affect the surface area and time. Access on both sides also matters. Include whether cleaning or damaged-board replacement is needed when describing the project.
What to send
Send the approximate length and height, photos of each side, close-ups of damaged areas and the label if you already bought a finish. Mention gates and whether the neighboring side is accessible. Weather and drying conditions affect scheduling.
Questions about fence staining & painting
Can you apply a finish I already purchased?
Send a photo of the product label and the fence first. Its suitability depends on the surface, existing coating and manufacturer’s instructions.
Can a fence be stained immediately after washing?
Only when the wood is dry enough for the chosen product. Drying time varies with weather, shade and the wood itself.
